Day 25 - Glacier NP 17 September

So, today we made the decision to take the long drive around the south of the national park to East Glacier, Two Medicine and Many Glacier. We were very glad that we did this as the scenery was spectacular. The day started a little foggy, but it soon cleared to a beautiful clear day.

We stopped off at a memorial to John Stevens who first charted the route across the divide to enable a railroad to be built. Conveniently, a freight train trundled by as we were looking at this monument.

Two Medicine was a lovely drive, in and out, with magnificent scenery. Glacier Park Lodge was worth a visit. An Adirondack style lodge with a huge atrium lounge and reception area.  However, it was the drive to Many Glacier Lodge which was the most outstanding. We had lunch at the lodge and the views were spectacular.

After leaving Many Glacier, were returned to St Mary to take the eastern section of the Going to the Sun road. On entering the park, the attendant at the gate told us the road was now open! So we were really pleased about that. Not only did we not have to return the way we came - a long drive - but we could travel the Going to the Sun road after all.

It is certainly a magnificent feat of engineering, but personally the outstanding scenery was around Many Glacier.
