Day 33 - to Custer 25 September

For the most part our drive through Wyoming into South Dakota was through flat, sometimes gently rolling countryside. An occasional stand-out natural feature provided some relief. Oil wells also dotted the landscape. Still plenty of Pronghorn Antelope and occasionally deer grazing along with sheep and cattle.

We made good time and decided to go up to visit the Crazy Horse Memorial before settling in to our accommodation in town.

This memorial was conceived by Chief Henry Standing Bear and in 1947 he invited Korczak Ziolkowski, who had worked with Gutzon Borglum on Mt Rushmore, to create this memorial to Crazy Horse. No federal or state funding has gone into this memorial which is continuing to be built little by little. Four of Korczak's ten children and 23 of his grandchildren are continuing his legacy, working on the project.

Another beautiful rest area - this is just a toilet block!

We were leaving Wyoming but this was the only decent sign we had passed as we entered Wyoming

Taken as we entered South Dakota

It's a slow process - money is short but with 1 million visitors a year hopefully this memorial will continue to progress

This bowl is made from bird feather quills

A local deer family we would see every day at our cottage

Chillin' at the Crazy Horse Memorial
