We are used to early
starts now. So it's becoming routine, even on a day when there is no reason to
get away early.
Our main objective
today - a transfer day - was to find the T.A Moulton barn. This historic barn
(and associated other buildings) were part of an old Mormon settlement in the
late 1800s. Situated right below the famous Grand Tetons, this barn features in
many photos of the area. So even before we left Australia, this was on my to do
list. Despite some early lingering low cloud it makes for wonderful photos.
As we continued to
Casper, our overnight stop on the way to South Dakota, we passed through some
lovely countryside - rolling hills and valleys swathed in autumn colours;
fringed with the ubiquitous Lodgepole pines.
We crossed the
Continental Divide yet again, but this time we were higher than on any previous
crossing, at 9658', over Togwatee Pass. Maybe this is a word from the local
Shoshone tribe.
We stopped for lunch
at a roadside rest stop. What a substantial place this was! Stone built picnic
huts, children's playground, pet running area (no pets on grass please), and a
substantial building for toilet facilities. I resisted the urge to photograph
the inside - fake marble basins and floor tiles, very clean and well cared for.
The rolling hills
and unusual rock formations which had dominated the first half of the day, now
changed to open plains with flat ridges reminiscent of Western movies. This
open countryside is home to Pronghorn Antelope. We saw many herds as we
continued towards Casper.
After a stop at
Devil's Half Acre, an amazing dead end canyon, used by Native Americans to herd
buffalo to kill, we continued on to Casper. Along the way the plains were
protected from wind drifts by massive snow fences. Difficult to capture in a
photograph.
