Today we said
goodbye to Columbia Falls to head to West Yellowstone. The sun was shining as
we left town promptly at 8.30am. Taking a scenic route we followed a valley
with mountains on both sides until we entered a State Forest. Few towns and
many lakes, this was a lovely drive. Very little in the way of traffic too.
The countryside
changed again as we continued to head south east. The ranges changed to rolling
hills and open farmland. Hay bales in abundance. Then we were driving through
an area where there were more traditional hay stacks. Lots of very black cattle
were scattered across some fields.
When we inevitably
joined an Interstate, we were in wide open plains, though, the mountains were
still in view. This is Montana after all.
As we leave I90 and
head south to Yellowstone, the rolling landscape is bordered by mountains ever
increasing in size. Patches of snow still linger in parts.
We drive along
unimpeded by traffic except for the occasional truck or a local. Agriculture
and cattle persist.
We stopped in Norris
for fuel and a pit stop. A small town, there was not much to recommend it but
directly across from the petrol station was a gorgeous 'rustic furniture'
place. Then we were back on the road and the scenery changed again. More
vegetation, mountains closing in. It was hazy - possibly smoke residue. We will
have to check on the fire situation.

Briefly we re-entered the State of Idaho but re-entered Montana and our house for the next four nights
Most signs in and out of Montana were very plain
We passed this fancy ranch along our route to West Yellowstone.
