Our first port stop - Skagen, pronounced Skain. A grey, cloudy day
greeted us. Undaunted, we took the shuttle into the town and walked the short
distance to the station where the bicycle hire shop was located. Two hours was
recommended for what we wanted to do, so off we went.
It was a really
windy day and rain threatened. We had a couple of light showers as we rode the
short distance (3.5km) to Grenen, but it was the wind which proved more of a
challenge. After parking and locking our bikes, we headed for the tractor
trailers which would take us along the sand spit to the 'end' of Jutland, where
the Skagerrak and Kattegat meet. Soon after the heavens opened, so we were very
lucky with our timing.
The short tractor
ride took us through the dunes to the flat sand spit where we were able to put
our feet in both seas. Being such a windy day, the seas were particularly
magnificent, roiling and crashing together - a splendid sight. After our 15
mins we boarded the tractor trailer again and headed back to the information
centre.
The weather was
still threatening, so we were hoping that we would not encounter any squalls on
our way back to town. We managed to make it - almost. We had to ride in rain
for a short way, but it was not too bad. We had achieved what we set out to do.
After a brief walk
through the pedestrianised part of this small town, we returned to the shuttle
as the weather was not improving, and headed back to the ship.
