Day 35 - Custer 27 September

Early start necessary today as we have a long drive to The Badlands. Along with the Black Hills this area has been on my radar for a long time.

First, though, we made a stop at a town called Wall. This name represents a section of The Badlands which is called The Badlands Wall, a specific geological feature of this intriguing area. However, it is more famous for the store Wall Drug which has a fascinating history and which has now become a major tourist attraction - tourist being the operative word, but nevertheless, curiosity won over and we dropped in. Quite a sight.

Driving through Hill City on our way to the Badlands there was this store selling chain saw carvings

We continued on to The Badlands National Park.

Wow is all I can say - the photos will speak for themselves. The three photos below were all taken from the exact same spot, looking in different directions. The variety of landscape is fascinating.

All there is to say is this starkly beautiful landscape changes at every turn, from deep vegetated valleys to rugged stark pinnacles of rock, to flat open grassland. Some formations are rather reminiscent of Purnululu National Park in The Kimberley, but these layered rocks are a much softer kind and more easily eroded.
